Ordering not works

We list articles from subcategories and want to order them according to a custom field (date; "datum"). Unfortunately ASC or DESC does not work.

{articles category="X" include-child-categories="true" limit="36" ordering="datum DESC"}

ordering by date fields is working fine on my setups.
Please not that empty fields will always be ordered last.

So:
"datum ASC"

- datum: 2021-02-03
- datum: 2023-04-05
- datum: -
- datum: -

"datum DESC"

- datum: 2023-04-05
- datum: 2021-02-03
- datum: -
- datum: -
