Tutorial for Add to Menu

There is a Free and a Pro version of Add to Menu.
The parts in this tutorial that only concern the Pro version will be marked with: Pro only

Introduction

Add to Menu is a Joomla! administrator module that provides a handy link to quickly add a menu item for the article or page that you are viewing in your Joomla! administrator panel.

For example, if you need to create a new article and add a link to that article in your menu, with Add to Menu this is done easily and quickly:

  • Create the article and save it
  • Now, whilst still in the article edit page, click on the 'Add to Menu' button
  • Select the menu you want to the new menu item to be in
  • Click 'Save'

And voila! You are done.

Without Add to Menu, this same process in Joomla otherwise takes a lot of steps. It would require to:

  • Create the article
  • Save and close the article
  • Navigate to the Menu Manager
  • Create a new menu item under the correct menu
  • Add the menu title
  • Select the correct page type
  • Find and select the correct article
  • Save the menu item

The 'Add to Menu' button will show up on the components supported by Add to Menu. This includes all core components such as articles, categories, contacts and more. The Pro version of 'Add to Menu' also has support for several 3rd party components.

How to use it

After installing the extension, you will now see an 'Add to Menu' button on several pages, such as articles, in your Joomla! administrator. This allows you to quickly add a menu item for that page.

Note that when creating a brand new item, you will have to first save it before you can see the Add to Menu button.

Add to Menu: Button

The button appears both as Editor Button and in the Toolbar. You can customize its appearance in the Add To Menu module settings.

After clicking on the Add to Menu link, you will be presented with a modal popup window with some general settings for the menu item.

Here is an example of the Add to Menu window for a standard article:

Add to Menu: Popup

To make the process faster, by default the Menu Title will already be pre-filled with the Article Title - but you can of course adjust all the menu options before creating the menu item.

The 'Add to Menu' popup window only offers the most basic options, as its goal is to help you quickly add menu items. If you need to customize any other more advanced menu settings, you will have to do that via the normal Menu Manager.

The Pro version of 'Add to Menu' also offers additional settings as well, such as the option to set Access Level, Language and Template Style.

Supported Components

Add to Menu will work on many types of core component pages by default, such as:

  • Articles
  • Categories
  • Contacts
  • News Feeds
  • Search
  • Users
  • Web Links

The Pro version of Add to Menu also has support for a number of well-known 3rd party extensions such as:

  • K2
  • FLEXIcontent
  • Form2Content
  • MyBLOG
  • Virtuemart
  • redSHOP

Component template XML files

Add to Menu works with XML component templates.

If you need the functionality of Add to Menu for a component it does not support, you can optionally create your own component templates to add support for it.

This is a little complicated but you can find more information on how to do this in the guide Add to Menu: Component template XML files.

Settings

There are a few settings you can adjust to customise the Add to Menu module's appearance. These are found under the Module Manager and filtering by Administrator Modules.

Here is the full list of options you can find in the Add to Menu administrator module settings:
